The Goa Police on Friday dismissed Sub-Inspector Nerlon Albuquerque who initially investigated the death of Scarlett Keeling. Alburqueque was the station officer at Anjuna when the British teenager’s death was reported.
The state had earlier removed Albuquerque from the investigation team and transferred him to the office of the Superintendent of Police. Despite the injury marks on Scarlett’s body, Alburqueque had reported it as a case of “accidental death due to drowning”.
Scarlett’s mother Fiona MacKeown had alleged that the remarks of the investigating team led to the observation of the first autopsy that the death was caused by “drowning in the beach sand waters”.
“He was under suspension and there was a preliminary inquiry on the manner in which he conducted the investigation. The IG (Goa) dismissed him after the inquiry found enough grounds to prove that he had not conducted the investigation as expected,” North Goa SP Bosco George told The Indian Express on phone.
Albuquerque had been suspended after the second autopsy report observed 50 injury marks on Keeling’s body and the forensic report sent to Mumbai’s Kalina forensic lab confirmed the presence of drugs in her body.
Meanwhile, the Goa Police also arrested bartender Samson D’souza and one Placido Carvalho who were allegedly the last two persons to meet the girl.
While D’Souza was booked for murder, Carvalho was booked for supplying drugs to D’Souza, which the police alleged was administered forcefully to Scarlett. Carvalho is now out on bail.
Albuquerque was suspended around the time Fiona MacKeown expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the case was being investigated and asked for a CBI probe. The case is now being investigated by the Central agency.
