Tension gripped village Loni in Burhanpur district after villagers allegedly tried to set a scheduled caste youth on fire early on Saturday, police said.
Police personnel have been deployed in the village following the incident and the situation is peaceful and under control, City Superintendent of Police Rajesh Khaka told reporters in Khandwa.
The incident occurred when a youth belonging to scheduled caste went to defecate near a temple which resulted in heated argument with the villagers, Khaka said.
The villagers then allegedly poured kerosene over him and attempted to burn him alive. The victim suffered 90 per cent burn injuries and has been referred to Indore for treatment, he added.
The villagers on the other hand alleged that after the argument the youth went to his house, poured kerosene and tried to burn himself.
However, police have registered cases against eight villagers who are absconding since then.
