The supreme court on monday granted interim bail to Alister Pereira, who was sentenced by the Bombay High Court to three years imprisonment for killing seven pavement dwellers while driving drunk. The court also admitted his appeal against the High Court judgment.

Pereira, 21, had run over pavement dwellers along Carter Road in Mumbai last November. Seven of them had died; eight were injured. A trial court had convicted him for rash and negligent driving and given him six months in jail. He has since been lodged in Arthur Road Jail.

Last week, Pereira filed a bail plea and an appeal in Supreme Court. He sought bail on the grounds that the trial and high courts had granted him bail during proceedings and he had never violated the conditions set. He also said he had paid the fine and compensated the victims’ families with Rs 3.5 lakh each.
