NEW DELHI, Aug 8: The Supreme Court today said it was “very disturbed” over the growing number of inter-state water disputes like the Almatti dam controversy and the Cauvery waters row and observed that “it was time everyone involved should think of the nation.”

This observation by a division bench comprising Chief Justice J S Verma and Justice B N Kirpal came during the hearing of suits by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the Almatti dam height controversy.Senior counsel for the Andhra Pradesh and counsel for Karnataka told the court that it was unfortunate that the Almatti had taken a political shape.

Karnataka counsel Nariman told the judges that the situation was so grave that no decision could be taken by either state unilaterally on merit regarding the project.

The judges observed that the court was inclined to ask someone not connected with either to decide such disputes.
