VADODARA, Sept 17: Almost five decades after the deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA structure, as it is better known, was discovered by scientists Watson and Crick, genetic studies have pervaded almost every sphere of human existence.
Charting the contribution of the human genome experiment to the world of science and the society at large, the city unit of the Society of Biological Chemists and the Gujarat Chapter of the Indian National Science Academy will organise jointly a seminar on `45 Years After the Discovery of DNA Structure’ in the city on September 20.
According to SBC president V V Modi, “Studies of the human genome sequence have helped evolve a better understanding of our genetic character, at the same time helping detect the weaker genes in the human system that lead to diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes. Judging by the progress made in the field over the years, men of science are confident that someday it will be possible to cure the diseases at the germinating stage, that is, even before a child is born.” The seminar will be held at Hotel Surya Palace, Sayajigunj from 9 am.
