Sayeed Ahmed Baba, a 1988-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as India's Consul General in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.Baba, a West Bengal cadre officer and currently private secretary to Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, succeeds Ausaf Sayeed who completes his tenure in May.Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said Baba's appointment to the post was made "several months back".The Consul General in Jeddah plays a crucial role in facilitating the annual Haj pilgrimage undertaken by several thousands of Indian nationals.
