The VHP may be all sound and fury against the A.B. Vajpayee Government when it launches a satyagrah over the Ayodhya issue here from March 27 following the dharm sansad resolve last month. In reality, the show may be just an exhibition match, intended to make it easier for the Centre to take ‘‘a proper decision.’’

RSS general secretary Mohan Rao Bhagwat has said in an interview to the Panchjanya that ‘‘if an organisation demonstrates its public backing in support of its cause, it gets easier for the Government to take a proper decision.’’

Bhagwat went on to say: ‘‘There is a limit to government compulsions. If public sentiment helps the government overcome these compulsions, it is just about fair.’’

Bhagwat’s words synchronise with the stated message from the RSS pratinidhi sabha at Nagpur that all Sangh Parivar outfits demonstrate a unity of purpose. The proposed VHP agitation and the Government application in the Supreme Court only lend credence to the latest Sangh-line.

The RSS general secretary was asked about the result of a confrontation between the swayamsevaks in the government on the one hand and those in the Ayodhya movement on the other in the course of the satyagrah. He said: ‘‘A peaceful satyagrah for a just cause is not forbidden in a democracy. There would be nothing improper if the swayamsevaks, while obeying the law, conduct a disobedience movement.

Reaching out to the Centre with one’s demand in a democratic manner is neither a fight nor a confrontation with it.’’

Though the RSS has backed all the VHP programmes, spokesperson Ram Madhav had declared yesterday that its swayamsevaks would participate in the satyagrah.

Regarding the minorities, Bhagwat said: ‘‘As far as the Sangh’s perception is concerned, Muslims and Christians are all Hindus. The change in mode of worship does not change one’s nationality. But they would be proud of their Hindutva only when the so-called Hindus start behaving as Hindus.’’
