MUMBAI, OCT 18: Imran Patel of Diamond Jubilee School and Rajesh Pungera of Ruia were the better boxers on view in the Schools Games Boxing Championships at the Siddharth College today.Imran won both his bouts, against Santosh Singh of Kirti in the light-fly weight section of the Mumbai District final and against Mohammed Rizwan of Rizvi in the Mumbai District and Suburban final well inside the distance.Imran looked in some trouble against Santosh Singh as he soaked a straight left from the opponent, waking up in the second to force two standing counts on Singh and winning on Referee Stop Contest (RSC).Against Rizwan, Imran let fly from the start and the contest ended after Rizwan took his second count in the second, the first came in the first round.Imran showed good defence and ability to counter-attack. He weaved out of trouble but looked reluctant at times to attack.Pungera, a south-paw, was far too good for his two opponents - Vivek Indulkar of Kirti in the feather of the Mumbai districtfinal and against Nigel Pinto of Rizvi in the Suburban district final.Pungera had the reach and enough power to hurt Indulkar and force two standing counts and won on the RSC outclassed in the first round.In the suburban final, Nigel Pinto doubled up in pain after Pungera's left, caught his ribs. Pungera earned a knock-out verdict.These two boxers showed some class and not without reason. Imran will be attending the National sub-junior camp at Dahisar from November 1.There were some outrageous fights and humorous ones too. The one that brought out the smiles was the battle between Anuj Nagpal (Wilson) and Shantanu Das of Lajpatrai. It was more of a pushing contest.
