NEW DELHI, May 28: Sanjeev Bhalla’s oppurtunistic header in the tenth minute off a Bhupinder Rawat cross saved three time winners FCI (North Zone) late evening worries and put them into the final of the Oriental Bank sponsored DSA Institutional league at Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.

They now take on a formidable Northern Railway team in the title round on Saturday.

Though the winners were clearly better than Central Secretariat and could have come away with a more flattering scoreline, they missed a good number of close ones even as the opponents’ defence warmed up to task ahead.

Bhupinder Rawat dominated the FCI forward line moves throughout the first half with immense back up from Tirlok Bisht and Niraj Chaudhuri even as Mobin, another talented forward, took a while to get into his groove.

In the only telling attack from the C. Sectt side, Himmat Singh shot off a searing long ranger in the second half that, to FCI’s luck, kissed the crossbar and sailed out. Almost immediately, Tirlok Bisht replied with an equally classy long ranger that scraped past the crossbar. Unlike their previous matches, Dalip Bhandari, Ravinder Waldia, Chandan Singh, and Sushil Chandra could not get their act together when it mattered.

Like Wednesday’s semi-final, today’s match too saw a rather large number of yellow cards, especially after FCI’s Niraj Chaudhuri was tackled roughly in the first half. FCI’s Sanjay, Ravi Rana, Bhupinder Rawat, and Central Secretariat’s Rajinder Kumar, and Ravinder Waldia were shown the yellow card.
