Sanjay Dutt remains withdrawn

Ever since he has been lodged inside Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail, Sanjay Dutt has been doing very little talking. Four security officers have been deployed in front of his cell.

Sanjay Dutt has remained withdrawn, saying little since he was lodged inside Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail on Tuesday evening, said jail officials.

“Sanjay refused to eat dinner served to inmates though he had an apple later in the night. He preferred fruit again to the breakfast of boiled eggs on Wednesday morning,” said another jail official. He also didn’t eat much in the afternoon, he said.

On Wednesday morning, he said he would like to meet his family — his sisters Priya and Namrata met him in the jail later in the evening.

Said Swati Sathe, Superintendent of Arthur Road Jail, “Yes, he (Dutt) had expressed a desire to meet his family members. He was served meals all the time like all other inmates but I would not like to comment on whether he had them or not.”

A police official posted at the jail said Dutt spent the night in Barrack No 1 with accused like Pravin Mahajan and Salim Fruit in adjacent cells. On Wednesday, Pravin Mahajan and Salim Fruit were shifted to Barrack No 10, while Yusuf Nullwala was brought to Barrack No 1 on Dutt’s request, the official said.

According to a jail official, “Dutt wanted to stay with his friend Yusuf Nullwala in Barrack No 10.” But instead of shifting Dutt, the jail authorities shifted Nullwala.

According to the jail authorities, Dutt would be taken to J J Hospital on Thursday. Earlier, the police had planned to take the actor to the hospital on Wednesday.

DIG (Prisons) SP Yadav told The Indian Express that “now Sanjay Dutt is just another inmate for us and that his wanting to meet his family is just his wish. But we can arrange for the meeting only if his family members want to meet him.”

Sanjay has requested the jail administration to keep him in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai so that he can continue to meet his sisters.

The jail administration has deployed a police officer, one green-belt staff and two jail officials in front of Dutt’s cell round-the-clock.
