The lone Indian presence in singles competition in the Wimbledon championships, Sania Mirza, will open her campaign against lower ranked Russian Yaroslava Shvedova. Sania, whose best performance on the hallowed turfs of the All-England Club has been a second round exit in 2005—her debut year on the tour—came back to action in the French Open after a injury forced her off the court for nearly two-and-a-half months. She failed to get past the first round at Ronald Garros. Sania is ranked 46th in the world now, while her Russian adversary is way down at 80th. She will also take part in the doubles, teaming up with Israel’s Shahar Peer. Seeded 16th, they will take on Sofia Arvidsson (Sweden) and Lilia Osterloh (USA) in the first round. In men’s doubles, fifth seeds Leander Paes and Martin Damm will face Chris Hoggard and Marcin Matkowski, while 11th seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Radek Stepanek will take on Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya.
