West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and Election Officer E P Kharbhih on Tuesday served a showcause notice on former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP’s chief ministerial candidate Purno Agitok Sangma for using visuals of the September 2005 Tura and Williamnagar police firings in his campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections. The notice has been served on Sangma, who is contesting from Tura, on the basis of complaints lodged by the family members of the victims of the firing. The relatives have also demanded that the video clippings in the CD “Chakat A’chik Me’a Me’chik” must be deleted. The family members have alleged that Sangma did not even inform them about his decision to include the video clippings in his campaign. The complainants said that the CD violates the Model Code of Conduct as it was tantamount to “hurting the sentiments of the bereaved families and also trying to influence the minds of the electorate to further the NCP’s poll prospect.”
