The VHP and Bajrang Dal today warned the Congress of dire consequences if it continued to make an issue of the controversial remarks of VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia against Sonia Gandhi.

They also warned against any attempts to corner the VHP leader. The warning came last night after a meeting of the two parties in Ayodhya.

Denying that the VHP secretary general had used any unparliamentary language against any Cong leader, Ramdham temple mahant Ram Shankar Das said: ‘‘The Congress, most probably, misunderstood the word he used and now it was using it for political gains.’’

VHP leader Sharad Sharma and Dal leader Ramesh Mani Dikshit also warned the Congress against blowing the issue out of proportion. If the Congress tried to force a confrontation, the Sangh Parivar would resort to a serious counter-attack, they warned.

In Nagpur, 100 slogan-shouting Congressmen hurled eggs, tomatoes and coal powder at Togadia as he emerged from the airport today. Chaos reigned for 15 minutes as police lathi-charged protesters and escorted Togadia out. Fifteen VHP workers were present too. Togadia later left for Dhamangaon in Amravati district.
