PUNE, Feb 23: A penalty in either half – resulting in goals and a point each, enabled Sangam Young Boys and Ghorpuri Young Ones to a draw in a group `A’ PDFA I-Division League tie, at the Ghorpuri Military ground, here today.

Sangam scored their first goal through skipper Raju Nikam in the 15th minute, while Vijay Kamhane restored parity via Vijay Kamhane (55th).

Sangam kept the GYO defence alert. With medios Mani Vishwanathan and Raju Vairat, feeding the wingers Javed and Malcom Rodrigues constantly, the moves ended up with the GYO defenders just about keeping them at bay.

Against the run of play, Mukund Satpute, in a bid to clear a high-rise ball, unfortunately handled the ball, resulting in the first penalty. Nikam, who stepped up. placed the ball with ease past custodian Satish Naik.

The game livened late in the first period when a free-kick awarded on the left almost had Javed score. The kick was awarded when Vairat setting off on a solo ended up in a heap when defender Alex Mathai roughly tackled him yards outside the box. Raju Nikam, who took the free-kick, floated the ball across for Javed, who in one action chested and headed feebly for the custodian to complete a regulatory collection. The attempt was basically thwarted by the casual approach of defenders Alex and Mukund Satpute who sprung up a trifle early.

A minute before the breather, GYO almost drew level through Anil Pardeshi. Getting the better of defender Kiran Sawant, ‘keeper Vijay Chinnaya, who left his charge, a collision by both led Anil utilise the mix-up and slip in a feeble try which lacked sting.

Changing sides, GYO fared better with Vinod Pardeshi, Vijay Pillay and Mohan Natarajan combining to great effect. On the other hand, Sangam grew with confidence and had Malcom release a cross, after cutting past Vinod Pardeshi on the left to see Nikam’s left-footer go over.

At the other end a melee outside the box had Vijay Kamhane, who found some free space, take a shy only to have defender Eknath Koram block well and fall backward. However, with the ball still not out of danger, Vijay’s attempt off the rebound found the defender’s hand and left referee MS Rawat with no hesitation in awarding a spot kick.

Javed’s combined move with Vairat on the left, which left the former with a simple tap homeward, was aimlessly hit away despite the ‘keeper being beaten completely. A stiff drive thereafter by Sunil Ghole, from inside the box, straight into the keeper’s hands summed up the end of a rather overconfident outing for Sangam.

Roopali win: In group `B’ action earlier, Roopali S.C put aside Old Boys Association (OBA) 3-1 in a match which had referee Ambrose Anthony fumble and award an `unnecessary’ penalty to OBA – which incidentally was their only goal in the match. A brace by Santosh Jadhav (10th, 45th) and a goal from Bapu Raikar (48th) was enough to neutralise the `gifted penalty’ converted by Indrajeet Late (30th).
