Indian top seeds Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Sanam Singh were upset by an unseeded Polish duo in the second round of the boys doubles championships of the Australian Open, but Sanam’s family here says they never put any extra pressure on their child.

The Indians lost 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 to Blazej Koniusz and Grzegorz Panfil in the junior section, their second set fightback worth nothing in the end.

The Indians faltered on the crucial occasions as they converted only three out of eight break points and winning on only 29 out of 44 occasions with their first serves. Koniusz and Panfil were more successful than Jeevan and Sanam in winning points on their first serves.

Even as Sanam’s father Kanwal Krishan Singh and mother Rupa Singh were busy keeping track of their ward’s progress, sitting at her Sector 8 residence, The Indians committed 13 unforced errors against seven by their rivals while their double faults also exceeded the Polish pairs’.

Rupa told The Indian Express: “I have been praying for his success ever since I saw him off at New Delhi for the tour Down Under. He was in good form and. I hope continues with the good work.”

Sanam, who is fourth seed in boys’ singes, will play Austen Childs in the third round of that category tomorrow.

He has put up with his cousin Daksh. “Daksh has been updating us about Sanam’s performance. Even if I am not able to speak to Sanam, Daksh fills in the gap by either calling me or sending me an SMS,” Rupa adds.
