Taking cognisance of The Indian Express expose on capitation fees in medical and engineering colleges, Maharashtra Governor Mohammad Fazal today directed the state to take corrective measures.

The Governor has requested Acting Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal (the CM is away on a foreign tour) to personally examine the issue of high fees and donations, and to take corrective measures in the light of reports in the press, the release said.

‘‘The Governor has expressed his deep concern over the high fee structure allegedly being levelled by private, unaided colleges for medical and engineering courses,’’ an official release from Raj Bhavan said.

The Indian Express, had on July 2, published a report about exorbitant fees charged for admission against management-allotted quotas in medical and engineering colleges run by private institutions, mostly dominated by politicians.

Fazal, who is chancellor of all the universities in the state, has expressed deep concern over the issue.

‘‘The Governor feels that the fee structure has to be reasonable and should not be profiteering. There should no profit earning or commercialisation of education. The fee to be prescribed has to be cost-based with some reasonable surplus, and based on the socio-economic conditions of society,’’the release says.
