SRINAGAR, Oct 2: An ex-serviceman was arrested by the police for allegedly raping a women colleague at the Zonal Sainik Welfare Board (ZSWB), after promising her a permanent job.

The arrest was made during a raid by Women’s Police led by Inspector Shahzada Malik on the ZSWB office in Batamaloo, here yesterday morning after tip-off by an informer. The culprit, Peshwari Singh, 58, a retired Army captain presently working as a head clerk at the Board’s office, was caught “red handed” during the act.

The medical examinations of the victim has confirmed the rape and a case under Section 376 and 511 RPC has been registered. The victim who is a widow said Peshwari Singh had asked her to come to the office regarding the pension case of her late father who was an employee in the Army.

“I used to go to ZSWB to inquire about the pension case of my father which he (Peshwari Singh) was dealing with. Last month, I got a temporary job in the Board,” she said .

“On Tuesday, he (Peshawari Singh) told me that Imust come to the office on Thursday to settle the pension case of my late father and to appoint me permanently. Yesterday morning, when I reached the office, He took me to a side room, where he grappled me, when I resisted, he overpowered me, tore my cloths and raped me, ”she added.

A police official, preferring anonymity, said “when we reached the spot and forced our way into the room, she was weeping while the culprit was trying to console her. Her clothes were torn and Peshawari Singh was almost naked.” The culprit has been arrested.
