Cementing his reputation as an actor of substance, the 52nd National Film Awards jury handed the Best Actor award to Saif Ali Khan for Hum Tum, the desi clone of When Harry Met Sally, besting hot contenders Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay Raz.
Madhur Bhandarkar’s Page 3, a no-holds-barred look into the people who grace it, walked away with the Best Feature Film Award. As debate rages over the Imrana episode, Kannada actress Thaara won the Best Actress award for the portrayal of a young Muslim wife questioning the traditional laws of her community in Hasina_her husband deserts her when she gives birth to a fourth girl child.
Veteran filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta won the Best Direction award for the Bengali film Swapner Din for his complex handling of the socio-political situation in West Bengal.
Jury chairman for feature films, Sudhir Mishra defended the choice of Saif, saying, “Shah rukh in Swades was not a bad performance. There were other performances also, which were good. But here is an actor who is approaching a role in a different way.”
