KOPARGAON, Nov 14: Tension prevailed in Kopargaon town of Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district today after Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party activists went on a rampage, destroying pandals set up to welcome senior Congress leader Sharad Pawar.
Police said the Shiv Sena and BJP, having 10 councillors in Congress-ruled Kopargaon Municipal Council, were protesting against leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha inaugurating four development projects in the town.
The Shiv Sena and BJP called a bandh in the town today in protest against, what the leaders of these parties described as the Congress trying to steal credit for the development work carried out in the town, which they claim took place due to their efforts.
A strict vigil was being maintained in the town, police said while all commercial establishments and restaurants remained closed in response to the call.
The president of Kopargaon Municipal Council, Suhasini Koyte told Press persons that Sena and BJP activists uprooted the pandals erected on main streets to welcome Pawar.
