CHANDIGARH, MARCH 19: In a bid to defuse the crisis in the Sikh clergy, Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has asked SGPC Chief Bibi Jagir Kaur to appear before the Akal Takht to resolve the stand-off sparked by her controversial ex-communication from the Sikh fold.

A decision in this regard was taken at a two-hour meeting of the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at the residence of SAD President and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The PAC had appealed to Akal Takht Jathedar Puran Singh, who had ostracised Jagir Kaur for defying his decision on the Sikh religious calendar, to resolve the issue at the earliest. Twelve of the 14 PAC members attended the meeting, Badal told reporters here, adding those not present were Surjit Singh Barnala and Sewa Singh Shekhwan.

He said Jagir Kaur had been asked to present her case before Puran Singh. The meeting authorised senior party leader Jagdev Singh Talwandi to meet Puran Singh for early resolution of the crisis.

The meeting hoped the Akat Takht Jathedar would soon call Jagir Kaur to resolve the crisis. Jagir Kaur was unavailable for comments.
