CHANDIGARH, Aug 18: ABOUT 46 activists of Punjab Nav Niyukt Adhyapak Union courted arrest, here today. The arrested activists included 20 women.
The arrests followed a day-long rally near the office of the Director of Public Instructions (Schools), in Sector 17.
According to police sources, they were arrested under Section 107 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C).
These former teachers were dismissed by the Punjab Government last year and have since been demanding back their jobs.
The protesters alleged that instead of sorting out the issue, they were lathi-charged by the police which resulted in injuries to a number of them.
In a statement issued today, the press secretary of the union said that they will continue their struggle till justice was done to them.
Today’s rally was addressed by Government Teachers Union president Sukhdev Singh, Democratic Teachers Front president Datar Singh and Government School Teachers Union president Baldev Singh, among others.
