MUMBAI, Sept 28: Vijay Merchant XI made 97 for the loss of two wickets against Dattu Phadkar XI on the first day of the rain marred 12th Sportstar Trophy Mumbai Cricket Association’s u-19 selection tournament at Brabourne today.

The other match at Elf-Vengsarkar was abandoned due to incessant rains.

The highlight of Merchant XI’s first innings today was an unbeaten half-century by opener Sachin Sawant, his 60 studded with 11 fours. He along with left-hander Vijay Singh put on 48 runs. After medium-pacer Sameer Gavas had dismissed Vijay for 14, Sawant and Amit Dhulap added another 33 run when off-spinner Amit Vinerkar scalped Dhulap for seven.

Earlier, former Test cricketer, Sandeep Patil inaugurated the tournament.

Kanchan, Nayak best

Gurumurthy Nayak (MMK) and Kanchan Pawar (Khandwala) emerged best in the men and women sections, respectively, in the Inter-Collegiate cross country races held atthe Karjat Engg. College, yesterday.

Men: 1 Gurumurthy Nayak (MMK) 48:21.2 sec; 2 Shivdhar Yadav (Hindi Deptt.) 48:58.8; 3 Tushar Patil (JSM) 49:18.5.

Women: 1 Kanchan Pawar (Khandwala) 21:47.6 sec; 2 Arti Malekar (Chinai) 22:13.3; 3 Vaishali Satardekar (Mithibai) 22:35.3.

Team (men):

1 JSM College, Alibag; 2 RK Talreja, Ulhasnagar; 3 KMC College, Khopoli.

Stanislaus advance

St Stanislaus A (Bandra) trounced St Andrew’s (Bandra) 4-0 in the under-8 quarter-finals of the Inter-School football tournament, sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive, on their homeground, today.

Karan Kapoor (2), Kelron Lewis and Keegan Pereira were the goal-getters.

In another tussle of the same competition, St Mary’s SSC A defeated St Mary’s ISC A by a solitary goal. The all-important goal was slammed by Arzan Mistry.

Varun, Rohil in lead

Varun Dattani, Rohil Bhat and Soumitra Mujumdare are theleaders in the under-9 section of the State Mini Chess Championships at the Dombivli Gymkhana here today.

Rohil defeated Aniruddha Deshpande while Soumitra Mujumdar scored over Vishal Shah. Varun got past Akshay Deshmukh in a prolonged match. Sachin Bedekar and Salil Nitsure trail the leaders with 3.5 points.

In the boys under-7 section, Sandeep Pawar, Sainesh Aher and Gaurav Konde share the lead with four points.

Even in the girls under-9 section, three share the lead after two rounds with two points — Ketaki Kulkarni, Soumya Swaminathan and Monita Agarwal, while Devangi Patankar along with Poorva Pavaskar, Shruti Ratnakar and Sidhali Shetye share the lead with two points.

DLGA sessions

The second edition of the Royal Challenge sponsored David Leadbetter Golf Academy (DLGA) training program will be held at the Royal Palms Golf and Country Club, Goregaon from September 30 to October 2.

At the event, Mark Reid will provide deeper insights into the game of golf through David Leadbetter’srenowned techniques which has shaped the careers of players like Nick Faldo, David Frost, Ernie Els, and Nick Price.

The first edition of the training program held earlier this year featured Indian pro Firoz Ali and amateur Amit Luthra.
