Sachin Tendulkar will form part of the 35 top-notch sportspersons who have consented to participate in the Beijing Olympics torch relay in New Delhi on April 17. Milkha Singh, Anju Bobby George, Shiny Wilson and former All-England badminton champion Pullela Gopi Chand were among other prominent sportspersons who have confirmed their participation.
According to Suresh Kalmadi, president of the Indian Olympic Association and Chairman of the Organising Committee 2010 Commonwealth Games, Sachin Tendulkar called him this morning to confirm his participation in the torch relay.
Kalmadi also said that many former and present sportspersons were calling him up to take part in the torch relay, but the IOA was not in a position to accommodate them all. “Since it’s an honour to be part of the torch relay, several of them want to be a part of it. But unfortunately we have a limit,” he said.
Asked about the torch relay route, Kalmadi said the details were being worked out with the authorities involved.
ANOC award
Meanwhile, Kalmadi was honoured with the ANOC Award for his contribution towards the Olympic movement at a glittering ceremony during the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) in Beijing. The award was presented by International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge and Mario Vazquez Rana, president of ANOC.
