Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused to concede to the demand of dissidents to replace Meghalaya Chief Minister JD Rymbai with his predecessor DD Lapang.

She unequivocally told Lapang to desist from trying to topple Rymbai and keep the change of leadership issue on the backburner.

She met the two in her office in New Delhi today and expressed her dismay at the power politics being enacted within the party in the state. AICC general-secretary Oscar Fernandes, in charge of Meghalaya, was also present at the meeting.

A top AICC functionary in New Delhi said over telephone that Sonia made it clear to Lapang that she was miffed over his efforts to eject Rymbai from the CM’s post. She reportedly told him to instead invest his energy in strengthening the party.
