Aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov was formally handed over to the Indian Navy today at a ceremony held at the Sevmash Shipyard at Severodvinsk.

Indian Ambassador to Moscow Krishnan Raghunath received the Gorshkov on behalf of the Indian Government from Russian Deputy Defence Minister A.M. Moskovsky, a press release issued by the Indian Embassy here said.

Senior officials, including Russian Navy Chief Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedev, general director of Rosoboronexport A. Belyaninov and Indian Naval Attache Commodore M.P. Muralidharan, were present at the ceremony.

‘‘The handing over of the carrier is a symbol of the Indo-Russian defence cooperation as well as the close association between the two countries, which has been consolidated into a strategic partnership,’’ the release said. The agreement for the acquisition of the aircraft carrier was signed last October.
