SURAT, Aug 18: Striking within days of issuing a warning to students riding two and four wheelers without licences, inspectors of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) registered 61 cases on Tuesday and clamped fines to the tune of Rs 40,000 from defaulters.

The surprise raids were carried out in Nanpura, Timaliawad, Majura Gate and Athwa Lines area of the city just three days after RTO K M Patel had, in a statement, warned parents and students of strict action against those violating the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The cases registered included those riding without licences, those riding with more than two persons, and those below 18 riding more than 50 cc vehicles.

According to RTO officials, the raids were conducted after complaints that students were riding recklessly in residential areas, posing a threat to pedestrians and school children.

According to the Motor Vehicle Act, those between 16 and 18 can ride a 50 cc and less vehicle and only those above 18 are eligible to ride a more than 50 cc vehicle.
