Remember the telling photograph of the symbol of Gujarat riots Qutubuddin Ansari with tearful eyes and folded hands begging to be spared? RSS weekly Panchjanya has raised questions about its authenticity.

The weekly sought to know why the rioters, who did not spare even pregnant women, spared Ansari, who was face-to-face with them. It also questioned why the photographer did not click a photograph of the rioting mob. And how did the mob allow the photographer to click Ansari’s picture?

Sources at the weekly said the reaction was due the recent appearance of his photographs along with reports that he was being rehabilitated in Kolkata.

Ansari is a tailor who lived in a one-room house in Rehmatnagar in Ahmedabad. On March 1, when rioting broke out, Ansari and his family, including his two children and wife, found their house surrounded by a mob, hurling stones, petrol bombs and burning rags. Soon, the belongings in the house were on fire.

The family moved to the terrace, but the mob would not leave. A helpless Ansari pleaded with the Rapid Action Force, which had arrived in the meantime, to save them.
