The RSS today opened a personal front in its offensive against the Congress, especially after HRD Minister said the Sangh had a role to play in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. RSS chief K. Sudershan today said Sonia Gandhi’s father had worked for the Soviet’s KGB and was a member of a ‘Fascist group’ in Italy.

‘‘Has her father Antonio Maino not worked for the KGB?’’ Sudershan said at the inauguration of a building for the Vishwa Samvad Kendra, a communication centre for the Sangh. The Congress chief, he said, had not passed a single examination in Cambridge. ‘‘It’s wrong to call her a leader of the masses because her party has not got a majority and formed a government in coalition,’’ he added.

Sudershan said the Sangh would take the Congress head-on over its attempts to label the RSS ‘‘assassin of Mahatma Gandhi’’. ‘‘The RSS and Mahatma Gandhi had good relations with each other and he even had praised the RSS in 1937 saying that it was good to see that there was no castiest approach within the Sangh Parivar,’’ he said. ‘‘We have already served a legal notice to the Congress on the issue and have taken special care to ensure that the party cannot get success in spreading the canard. The RSS workers have also been directed to take care of the issue.’’
