MUMBAI, June 28: The Ghatkopar police have arrested a gang of five robbers involved in at least four major robberies in Mumbai during the last three months, including the Rs 95 lakh heist at Giriraj Jewellers, Borivli, and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh from them. Two autorickshaw drivers are among those arrested, and two jewellers have also been detained by the police for questioning.

After receiving a tip-off that two Ghatkopar-based jewellers were to purchase stolen jewellery from two automen and three others at Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, police laid a trap at the spot on Friday night and nabbed them. The accused have been identified as Ramesh Biju, Shivaji, Abdul Samad, Shaikh Maqbool and Sudhir Patel. The five have also been charged with robbing Prashant Jewellers and Alankar Jewellers, Ghatkopar, and Kanchan Jewellers, Dahisar. The total amount of the stolen booty is estimated to be around Rs 2 crore.

Police said they hoped to nab more people involved in jewellery heists, including somejewellers who have purchased stolen jewellery. Deputy commissioner of police (zone-VI) Dalbir Bharati refused to divulge any more details about the accused, saying it may hamper further investigations.
