Bokaro, May 16: With the first phase of modernisation of the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) drawing to a close, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) plans to invest Rs 5,000 crore in the second phase to increase the BSL’s production capacity from 4 million tonne to 5.5 million tonne.

An official spokesman said that SAIL planned to invest Rs 12,000 crore during the ninth plan period in steel sector, and of the proposed investment, Rs 5,000 crore would be earmarked for modernisation of BSL in the second phase. “The cold rolling mill will be the area of focus in this phase,” the spokesman said. The plant had already drawn up plans for upgrading the mill which would start this year and be completed “before competitors come on stream”.
