With a decision on increasing the administered price of fuels imminent, the Petroleum Ministry’s advisory cell has mooted hefty increases in retail prices.
In a snapshot dated April 19, the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell has said that petrol prices should go up by Rs 5.66/litre to a tad under Rs 50 in Delhi, while diesel should go up by Rs 7.64/litre to Rs 38.11.
These price hikes are based on international prices as of the first fortnight of April. Specifically, the note takes the value of the Indian basket of crude oil at $68.41 per barrel. As things stand, international crude prices are touching $75 per barrel.
According to the note, PDS Kerosene prices should go up by Rs 14.26/litre, while a cylinder of domestic LPG would become dearer by Rs 195. The ministry estimates that under-recoveries of the oil marketing companies will touch Rs 57,000 crore during 2006-07.— ENS
