India’s Ambassador to the United States Ronen Sen has been summoned before the privileges committee of the Lok Sabha on October 29. He has been asked to appear before the privileges committee of the Rajya Sabha on November 2.
The two committees had decided to summon Sen during their last meetings. Though both bodies are independent, they had resolved to act in co-ordination with each other given the fact that the matter pertains to the same remarks made by the same individual.
The committees had also decided to ensure that Sen did not have to make two visits to the country to face them. The Lok Sabha committee is headed by Congress General Secretary Kishore Chandra Deo and the Rajya Sabha panel is presided by House Deputy Chairman Rahman Khan.
Sen had attracted the ire of members of both the Houses after he made the “headless chicken” remarks for the opponents of the India-US nuclear deal in the course of a media interview. Though Sen offered an apology later and clarified that he had made the remark to refer to some people in the media, members of the two Houses insisted upon the matter being referred to the privileges committees.
