Vijayawada, March 10: Asian under-10 boys’ runner-up G Rohit of AP upset Fide-rated Kesavananda Krishna of Railways in 33 moves. International Master-elect Dinesh Kumar Sharma (LIC) emerged sole leader with 5.5 points after defeating overnight leader and second seed Syed Anwar Shazuli (TN) at the conclusion of the sixth round in the ninth Andhra Gymkhana National Youth (Under-25) chess tournament on Friday.

Pankaj Joshi (Venus), Manish Joshi (MP), Syed Anwar Shazuli (TN) and Prasanna (TNCA) are placed in the second spot with five points.

Rohit, playing whites, started with e4, for which Krishna replied with Sicilian defence. In a game which went into closed variation, Rohit sacrificed his major piece rook for his rival’s minor piece bishop and exploited his rival’s uncastled king and got two potential pawns. Finally, the game went into rook versus knight and Rohit’s extra pawns decided the win.

On the top board, against Sharma, Shazuli started with queen pawn and the game went into queen’s gambit exchange variation. Shazuli’s fourth move proved costly (e3) as it hampered the progress of his bishop. After the 12th move, Shazuli’s queen-pawn become isolated and consequently, he lost his pawn. Sharma utilised his extra pawn to the hilt and forced a victory after 35 moves.

Joshi employed King’s Indian defence against C Natarajan (TN) who started with d4. Natarjan opted for Kolle system. The blunder committed in the opening phase forced Natarajan to get into minus position, allowing Pankaj Joshi to launch king side attack. Pankaj gained material and forced Natarajan to resign at 31th move.
