Large-scale transfer of police inspectors in Uttar Pradesh, apparently over the alleged assault of the driver of Chief Minister Mayawati’s father, earned the wrath of coalition partner Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) today, which objected to the alleged singling out officers of a particular caste.

The MLAs have called a meeting of its legislature wing and alleged that the CM had shifted 25 Jat (the Dal’s vote bank) and Thakur officials for no fault of theirs. ‘‘Only one inspector was involved and should be punished but she shifted all,’’ the MLAs claimed and threatened to reconsider their tie-up with the party if the rest of the officers were not brought back within three days.

The MLAs have communicated the decision to the CM and BJP Legislature Party leader Lalji Tandon. ‘‘They have assured us that they will look into the matter within the time-frame,’’ said Lok Dal MLA Samarpal Singh.

The Lok Dal has 14 MLAs and three Independents who support to the Mayawati government. ‘‘We extended support for development not for allowing anyone to play the caste card with vendetta,’’ said a MLA.

The CM had shifted one Circle Officer, 23 S-I and one Inspector following an incident in which her father’s driver was beaten up by an Inspector in Bulandshahr district on Friday.
