Controversial RJD MP Shahabuddin has taken his tussle with the Bihar police to a new level by writing to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam that his life is under threat from DGP D.P. Ojha. In the letter written nearly three weeks ago, the MP alleges Ojha is conspiring to eliminate him and requests protection.
Sources close to the MP said today that removal of several Muslim police officers from Shahabuddin’s stronghold, Siwan district, has scared the MP who faces more than 30 criminal cases.
IG and spokesperson of Bihar police Rithu Raj said the MP’s allegations were not worth commenting upon, adding that ‘‘Bihar police’s action against all sorts of criminals will continue.’’ Asked whether he considered Shahabuddin among them, Raj said, ‘‘I will neither say yes nor no.’’
Bihar police have been closing in on several people, including RJD minister Ijajul Haque, considered close to Shahabuddin. Police had raided the MP’s farmhouse in Islampur in Siwan district on April 21 and soon after arrested Sultan Mian, Bihar’s most wanted contract killer who confessed that his relation with Haque is that of master-slave.
Shahabuddin had then admitted that he knew Mian, but denied closeness. Police officials say they are investigating the links between Mian and the minister and Haque will be questioned if need be.
Shahabuddin’s relations with Laloo Prasad Yadav is also under strain, resulting in serious speculations that the former may leave the
RJD. Meanwhile, the BJP and Samata Party, both reportedly interested in wooing him to their fold, have been guarded in their criticism of the MP.
Shahabuddin had reportedly objected to the appointment of Ojha as DGP, but Laloo had overruled it. On a parliamentary tour right now, Shahabuddin was not available for comment today.
