West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee faced a grieving mother on Saturday, a mother who pleaded for “insaaf” for her son Rizwanur Rehman.

The CM, who spent nearly 45 minutes at Rizwanur’s home speaking to his mother and relatives, asked for more time before he could take action against the offending police officers. “Have faith in me and let the inquiries be over before I can act,” Bhattacharjee reportedly told the family.

The clamour for justice was also heard from amongst the hundreds of people who had gathered in the locality. The crowd demanded justice by way of punishment to the guilty police officers and a CBI inquiry. Shouts of “Insaaf kab hoga? Police walon ka arrest kab hoga? Itne din kahan the aap?” rent the air.

The CM could leave only after facing an angry mob blocking his way for five minutes shouting anti-government slogans. Some banged on his car even as it inched forward through the congested lanes of Tiljala Bustee, where Priyanka Todi lived with Rizwanur after their marriage in August. The family members said the CM agreed that the police had intervened in the case and also acknowledged the possibility of murder.

“I told the CM that I have lost my son forever and asked him when will I get justice. He promised said that I will get justice and the guilty will be punished. But he begged for some time. He said Rizwan’s death is not only my loss, but also a loss for the state,” said Kishwar Jehan, Rizwanur’s mother after the Bhattacharjee left her home.

Abdus Sattar, MoS for Minorities Development and Welfare, who accompanied the CM, said: “The CM promised that the guilty will be punished, but asked for time. He asked the family why they had not approached him earlier.”
