CBI on Monday called the officer in-charge and two sub-inspectors of Karaya police station in Kolkata for interrogation in connection with the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman after he married the daughter of an industrialist.

“The two sub-inspectors and the officer in-charge of Karaya police station have been called for examination,” Kolkata Police commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty said.

The two sub-inspectors of Karaya police station Jayanto Mukherjee and Pulok Dutta are being interrogated by the CBI officials at the agency’s office at Nizam Palace in the city.

The officer-in-charge, Swapan Kumar Mitra will be interrogated later, CBI sources said.

The two sub-inspectors had gone to Rizwanur’s Tiljala residence, falling under the Karaya police station, on August 31 when Rizwanur and his bride Priyanka, daughter of city-based industrialist Ashok Todi, returned to his house after registering their marriage under the Special Marriages Act on August 18.

The duo, when interrogated by the CID earlier, had said that they were on a mobile van when they saw an expensive car standing outside Rizwanur’s house at Tiljala late in the night of August 31 and had entered the house out of curiosity.

It was there they met Ashok Todi, his brother Pradeep and relative Anil Saraogi and came to know of the marriage, Mukherjee and Dutta had told newsmen after being interrogated by the CID.

Rizwanur’s elder brother Rukbanur had also corroborated the presence of the two policemen in the house that night and that they had left after seeing the marriage certificate.

Though the two sub-inspectors had been interrogated by the CID, the officer in-charge had never been called.

Rizwanur and Priyanka, whose family was against the marriage, had been called to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar on September 1, 4 and 8 and the girl had returned to her father on September 8 after an agreement that she would return a week later.

The youth’s body was found on railway tracks beside Dum Dum GRP barrack in the city, far from his home on September 21.

On October 17, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee transferred five police officials, including the city police commissioner and two deputy commissioners in connection with the case.

CBI inquiry was ordered into the case after the deceased’s family petitioned for it in the Kolkata High Court.
