Chile’s Marcelo Rios, the highest remaining seed, and South Korea’s Lee Hyung-Taik advanced to a quarter-final showdown at the ATP international championship here yesterday.

Third seed Rios, a wild card in his first hard-court event of the year, eliminated Dutchman Martin Verkerk 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 while Lee ousted Swiss foe Michel Kratochvil 6-2, 6-3 in second-round matches at the $380,000 event. Rios, a finalist in Vina Del Mar, rallied after dropping the first set and learned how to counter his ball-bashing rival as the match wore on.

The South American star rose to 9-3 on the year with his third trip to the final eight.

Lee, 27, won his first ATP title in Sydney in January and has not dropped a set in his two matches this week in delray beach. American Mardy Fish and Spain’s Alberto Martin will meet in another quarter-final, with the winner to face either Lee or Rios for a berth in the finals.

Dent earns Scottsdale win

Scottsdale: Taylor Dent, winner of an ATP title only a fortnight ago, changed his serve and charged into the quarter-finals of the $400,000 Templeton Classic here yesterday. Dent, a champion indoors last month in Memphis, switched from raw power to crafty spin as he out-foxed American compatriot Cecil Mamiit 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in their second-round showdown.

Dent’s big serve has often been a potent, but often inefficient weapon during his career.
