SHIMLA, June 8: In a suo motu action today, the State Human Rights Commission has sought a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, and Director, Education, on the death of a Class VI student, Jeet Ram, after being allegedly beaten up by a school teacher at Chowai near Ani.

Alarmed over the incident, as reported in The Indian Express, chairman of the Commission, Justice P C Balakrishnan Menon, also issued notices to the District Education Officer (DEO), who is reported to have visited the school and asked Kullu DC R D Dhiman to submit his report within a week. The report of the DEO is, however, awaited.

The teacher, Lalit Kumar, who is alleged to have kicked the victim, Jeet Ram, in his back, is absconding. The school staff maintain that Lalit Kumar is on leave. The headmaster of the school, however, failed to give the exact account of the incident. "We will get an in-depth report and initiate a high-level inquiry into the incident," sources in the Human Rights Commissionsaid.

Meanwhile, the case history of Jeet Ram, who died at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital on June 4, reveals that the boy was suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, which seems to have got aggravated after he was kicked at the right side of his body.

The doctors, however, admitted that even with a history of tuberculosis, the boy could not have died.
