
August 4: The City Civil and Sessions Court today sentenced three brothers to rigorous life imprisonment for stabbing to death a person four years ago.
Sessions Judge Y N Athalye sentenced Amarnath Sampat Maurya (19), Amarbahadur S Maurya (22) and Vinaybahadur S Maurya (25), to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 for murdering Rajendra M Vijay (32).
The judge convicted the trio on the basis of statements by foureyewitnesses. One among them was also stabbed by the Mauryas.
On April 10, 1993, the Maurya brothers were involved in a scuffle over fare to be paid to taxi driver Sitaram Pandey, a resident of Mograpada locality. As the fight worsened, the taxi driver’d brothers Shyamsunder, Radheshyam and uncle Shardaprasad, arrived at the scene only to find Amarbahadur stabbing in Shyamsunder’s back, Vinaybahadur standing with a knife in his hand and Amarnath holding an iron rod.
During the entire episode at Panipuriwala chawl, Andheri (E), Vijay, standing nearby watched without moving. It was revealed that the Mauryas had enmity with him too. As Shyamsunder collapsed after the knife attack, they pounced upon Vijay and stabbed him. Seriously injured, Vijay was rushed to the Cooper hospital but was declared dead before admission at around 11.15 am. The Andheri police had investigated the case. Public prosecutor Mohini Khatri represented the state.
