RAJKOT, JAN 28: Friday’s tremor didn’t do a Bhuj at Rajkot, but the residents refuse to take any chances. So what if the city had been spared the fate of its less fortunate neighbours when the big jolt came? Rajkot is in no mood to take the aftershocks lightly. The residents of the city have spent two nights out in the open. They panicked everytime an aftershock — however mild — was felt.

More than 48 hours after the quake struck, people are now ready to take on all eventualities. Bags have been stuffed with money, jewellery and other important documents. Several have broken the compound walls of their apartment buildings and houses to make escape easier. Those who are staying inside their houses are keeping the doors open day and night.

Resident of a housing board society on Kalawad Road, Ila Pandya says she has packed cash and jwellery in a bag which she always carries around with her. Men in most families are carrying cash with them as a precautionary measure, she added.
