DHAKA, March 8: Residents of the enclaves on Indo-Bangladesh borders may be given an option of choosing their citizenship. In a major disclosure in Parliament today, Home Minister Refiqul Islam said an understanding has been reached with India to resolve the age-old thorny problem of the enclaves.

An unknown number of people have been living in more than 100 enclaves on both sides of the borders since the partition of India in 1947.

The Home Minister said, “an understanding has been reached with India to resolve the age-old problems of the enclaves.”

He said, either the enclaves would be exchanged or the residents of the enclaves be given an option to choose the citizenship (of India or Bangladesh). A mechanism would be worked out through discussion he said.
