The wreckage of a Sea Harrier fighter jet that crashed in the Arabian Sea during a routine sortie near Goa on August 24 has been recovered by the Indian Navy.

Naval ships equipped with sophisticated hydrographic facilities searched for three days before they found the remains of the aircraft lying at a depth of ninety metres in the sea today.

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) assisted in the search operation by providing specialised diving facilities. The wreckage was carried to Goa and is likely to provide vital clues for ascertaining the cause of the mishap. The pilot had managed to save himself by ejecting out of the aircraft in time.

In April this year, a Sea King helicopter was recovered after it had crashed off Ratnagiri’s coast.
