Industrialist Mukesh Ambani has met CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury, apparently to discuss his business plans and gauge the party’s position on crucial issues.
The meeting took place late on Monday at the CPI(M) headquarters in the Capital. ‘‘It was a courtesy call. The meeting was generally about his business,’’ said Yechury. But issues pertaining to workers were also taken up at the meeting. However, no specific business project was discussed.
Ambani’s visit is the second such stopover by a top industrialist at the CPI(M) headquarters.
On October 11, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal met CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat to brief him about his business plans for India. Mittal has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Jharkhand government for setting up a steel plant in the state. The very same day, Lord Swraj Paul met Karat and Yechury, as he headed a British parliamentary delegation on a visit to the country.
A CPI(M) leader said the recent meetings with business leaders were clearly aimed to meet and ‘‘build a rapport’’ with CPI(M) bosses, especially on labour issues where the party has held strong pro-worker positions.
