AHMEDABAD, SEPT 16: The Central Bureau of Investigation (Anti-Corruption Branch), Gujarat, arrested chief of Regional Passport Office, Ahmedabad, J R Ambre and a RPO superintendent M H Muthuliya on Friday. With these, the number of arrested persons following busting of the fake passport racket on May 30 has gone up to 17.Though CBI officials remained tight-lipped about Ambre's involvement in the racket, well-placed sources told The Indian Express that besides being in hand-and-gloves with more than 60 touts and travel-agents, Ambre had roped in some of his junior colleagues into the racket. ``He not only issued a large number of passports in exchange for hefty sums of money but forced some of his colleagues to pass on fake applications to him, which he signed and cleared,'' the source said.``We are yet to ascertain how much wealth he amassed while heading the racket but once we take him on remand for further investigation, we will be able to find out the amount of money he accepted as bribe,'' the sources said.It was also learnt that the agency officials seized a large number of fake documents signed by Ambre which ``clearly reveal his involvement in the racket.''
