Jalandhar: The Jalandhar Police have busted five gangs involved in incidents of chain snatching, robbery, smuggling and other crimes, according to SSP P.S. Gill, Jalandhar. Gill said two gangs of chain-snatchers have been busted and Rs 70,000, 11 golden chains and gold ornaments worth Rs 48,000 recovered. A group “specialising” in snatching of cash outside the banks was also busted and a .315 bore rifle, a .38 bore revolver and some cash recovered. The SSP said during the past fortnight police have arrested 70 criminals, solved 66 cases and recovered stolen property worth Rs 12.29 lakhs, in addition to seizing 9.63 quintal of poppy husk.
Strike call
Patiala: The Patiala branch committee of Northern Zone Insurance Employees’ Association has supported the nationwide stir on December 11 by the industrial workers. The call for the strike has been given by the Left front parties. The President of Employees’ Union of Life Insurance Corporation said that the Union has decided to participate in the strike.
Patiala: Punjab State Karamchari Dal has threatened to organise a statewide protest rally on February 10 in Chandigarh if the state government fails to accept their long pending demands, according to a Dal press release. The Dal state president has appealed to the state government to accept the recommendations of the anomalies committee till December 31. He also strict government action to check price rise. The Dal has also supported the protest dharna call of panchayat secretaries on December 16.

Mishap
Abohar: Jagdish Handa, a car driver and resident of local Nai Abadi was killed in an accident near village Maujgarh on Abohar road. As per information available while returning to Abohar after leaving a marriage party at Ganganagar, Jagdish’s car collided with a truck. Jagdish was killed on the spot and his body handed over to relatives after the postmortem.
115 operated for cataract
Abohar: One hundred and fifteen patients, who underwent cataract operation at a free eye operation camp, were distributed spectacles at the concluding function of the camp. Lion Anil Kamra, president of the club said another free eye operation camp shall be organised in the month of March at local Shree Navdurga Cheritable Trust.
Draw for New Amritsar residential plots
Amritsar: The Improvement Trust of Amritsar held draw of lots for allotment of residential plots in first phase of New Amritsar city being set up on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT road. Minister for Local Self government Balramji Dass Tandon presided over the ceremony. According to the chairman of the Trust, draw of lots was held for 881 plots. He said total number of available plots was 1,150. The first phase plots measure 100, 150, 200 and 250 sq. yards.
Rajput said applications for second phase of New Amritsar had also been invited and that draw of second phase will be done shortly.
Punjab Home Guards anniversary celebrations
Amritsar: The Home Guards jawans had fought shoulder to shoulder with other defence personnel during the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars, sai B.S. Tiger, District Commandant, Home Guards, and Civil Defence while addressing a gathering on the celebrations of 38th anniversary of Punjab Home Guards and Civil Defence today. He said nearly 30 Home Guards jawans sacrificed their lives in the wars and 38 officers and jawans were awarded President’s Medal. The Home Guards also displayed various rescue exercises and cultural shows.
