RallyAmritsar: The Panther Division of Army yesterday organised a run for Independence in which about 1500 persons participated including 300 women, 46 veterans and 300 children. Major General Avtar Singh, GOC of Panther Division, flagged off the runners. Almost all officers of the Army and their wives participated in the race. Deputy commissioner Amritsar Narinderjit Singh and his wife were among civilians who attended the event.Amritsar: United Teachers Front has cancelled its proposed rally of August 13 at Chheherta, this was stated here today by Kuldip Singh Mohawa, senior vice president of Government Teachers Union. In a press statement, he said the rally would now be held in front of the office of district education officer as decided by various teachers organisations.CrimePhagwara: Baljit Kaur, 25, died on the spot while 10 others were wounded when a Tata-407 four-wheeler overtunred near Chaheru overbridge on Phagwara-Jalandhar national highway last evening, police sources said. Of the wounded, whose identity could not be ascertained, five were admitted to the local civil hospital and the remaining five were under treatment in Jalandhar Civil Hospital. The mishap occurred when driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into roadside ditch,the sources added.Jalandhar: A young Nepali woman was strangled to death allegedly by her husband at Makhdoompura locality of the city today. Police said the body has been removed to the local civil hospital for inquest. Jog Bahadur, Nepali husband of the victim, has been detained for questioning. The couple married for five years, has no children, police added. Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl, who left home at Sant Nagar in Basti Sheikh of the city along with a 17-year-old boy of Bhargava camp on Friday, died of suspected poisoning in the civil hospital here last evening. In a press release here yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise Suman Bala said the party was clearing man-made fabrics without payment of central excise duty.CampsMoga: Two camps for brick kiln owners, masons and firemen will be held at Ludhiana and Bathinda tomorrow and August 12 respectively to train construction workers on erection of chimneys on the basis of specified designs. The camps are being organised by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology which noticed that local brick kiln owners were changing the design of kilns on their own and constructing circular chimneys following directions from masons, these chimneys are consuming a high number of bricks, thereby causing a hike in construction, a release by the Directorate of Environment noted.
