SHIMLA, MAY 1: Former chief minister Virbhadra Singh today said he was surprised that the state government had ordered a probe into the recruitments made during the Congress regime.

"This is a cheap political gimmick meant to make an issue out of a non-issue just to mislead the people," he said in a statement here.

He claimed that these appointments were made by the Congress government in accordance with rules and norms. He said the Congress party was not afraid of such inquiries.

He said "This ploy of the BJP government is a conspiracy to remove thousands of these appointees so as to make way for their own kith and kin." Virbhadra said the people would not not allow the BJP government to play with the future of thousands of people who had been given employment "purely on merit".

Virbhadra Singh alleged that during the 1990-93 BJP regime not even a single person was given employment, rather thousands of daily wage workers were retrenched.

He said the fact remains that his government had given employment to thousands covering all sections and regions of the state without any discrimination. The Congress government had also regularised 35,000 daily wagers but BJP, he alleged, was perturbed over the issue and was trying to find faults with appointments.
