MUMBAI, December 21: History was made at the Mahalaxmi racecourse here on the tenth day of the Mumbai Meeting 1997 on Sunday with the carried over amount of the combined jackpot of Rs 31 lakh touching an all-time high of over Rs one crore.

Twenty-five winners — six of them from the Mumbai and Pune (Western region) — will share the unprecedented booty of Rs 1.2 crore minus tax and club commission of 40 per cent. The tax announced by former finance minister Manmohan Singh will also whittle down each individual share of Rs 1,71,542 by 40 pc.

The previous record was Rs 48 lakh won by film lyricist Rajendra Krishna. He was the luckier one; he escaped the tax.
