Pune, March 22: Former supercop Julio Rebeiro on Tuesday called for halting the misuse of authority to transfer policemen by the State Government for political reasons by setting up a non-political commission to look into this issue.

He was speaking at a book release function of his autobiography Bullet for Bullet which has been translated to Marathi by journalist Manjiri Damle. The chief guest was former Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar.

Rebeiro lamented that the police officials often become the victims of ‘political’ transfers which badly affects the morale of the police force. He said this trend has to be stopped.

He said, politicians often shunt out senior policemen who do not toe their line and handpick such officers who serve their purpose which is very detrimental to society. He said transfers are also made for monetary considerations which, instead of rooting out corruption, only encourages it in the Police Department.

"Consequently, the goodwill, trust and confidence which used to be the hallmark of policemen during my tenure seems to be fast eroding," Rebeiro said.

Criticising politically motivated transfers, Inamdar said a bullet injury sustained by an upright police officer heals after the passage of time. But his victimisation by senseless transfers leaves an indelible scar on him.

Inamdar said, "with folded hands, I appeal to the State Government to stop this trend of shunting out upright police officers. Otherwise, it will do irreparable damage to society and the Police Department."

He said, "in the wake of what happened in Kashmir today, only highly motivated policemen can tackle terrorists. It takes men like Shivaji to destroy men like Afzal Khan," he added.

"Nowadays, P for police is replaced by P for promotion, P for perks, P for posting and P for paisa, which is a very dangerous trend," he added.
